Tour of Collection Highlights at the Timken Museum & Lunch at ARTIFACT

On Saturday, April 26th, members of the California and Northwest Chapters of the Patrons came together in the heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park for a rich day of cultural discovery and culinary delight. The event began with a docent-guided tour at the Timken Museum of Art and concluded with a thoughtfully curated lunch at ARTIFACT, the celebrated new restaurant at the Mingei International Museum.

The day began at 11:30 AM with a private tour of the Timken Museum, a jewel-box institution renowned for its exceptional European Old Master paintings, 19th-century American art, and rare Russian icons. During the tour, patrons were treated to an in-depth exploration of selected works from the collection, with a special focus on pieces that embody spiritual and religious themes. Highlights included masterworks by Rembrandt, Bruegel, and Hals—each offering patrons a moment of quiet reflection and connection with centuries of artistic tradition.

Following the tour, guests made their way across the plaza to ARTIFACT, located on the ground floor of the Mingei International Museum. There, a beautifully curated lunch awaited, offering a modern take on ancient flavors. The menu, crafted by Culinary Director Tim Kolanko and chefs Wesley Johnson and Tony Coito, was inspired by global spices, traditional methods, and the diverse cultural narratives celebrated by the Mingei Museum.

Restaurateur Tracy Borkum’s vision for ARTIFACT—along with her renowned CUCINA family of restaurants—shone through in every detail, from the warm ambiance to the exceptional service. Dining amidst the museum’s rotating exhibitions, patrons experienced a perfect synthesis of food, design, and global art.

This special gathering in Balboa Park offered not only a glimpse into timeless works of art but also a shared moment of community and conversation. Thank you to everyone who joined us in making the day so meaningful—we look forward to more enriching events to come.
