Brunch & Norton Simon Museum Visit

Brunch & Norton Simon Museum Visit

All current members of the California and Northwest Chapters of the Patrons are cordially invited to a 10am seated brunch at The Luggage Room in Pasadena, followed by a visit to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena on Sunday, May 21st at 12pm for a docent-guided tour of the Saint Sebastian: Anatomy of a Sculpture exhibition as well as highlights from the permanent collection.

An iconic neighborhood gathering spot, The Luggage Room is housed in the historic 1934 Del Mar Train Station, restored to bring back the original charm of the building. The stepping-off point for the stars of Hollywood’s golden age like Clark Cable, Mae West and Will Rogers, The Luggage Room features regionally inspired takes on Californian classics.

The Norton Simon Museum presents an exhibition dedicated to a single work of art: a 15th-century Italian painted sculpture of Saint Sebastian from the Norton Simon collections. Through historical and scientific research, Saint Sebastian: Anatomy of a Sculpture explores the rich life of this previously unstudied artwork from its creation to its arrival at the Museum. The exhibition is a collaboration between Assistant Curator Maggie Bell and Conservator John Griswold.

According to legend, Sebastian was a 3rd-century Roman soldier condemned to death by Emperor Diocletian for his Christian beliefs. He survived this first attempt on his life and was nursed back to health by holy women. His pious endurance and miraculous recovery became associated with salvation from the bubonic plague, which persisted in Europe from the 14th to 17th centuries, inspiring numerous images of the saint in churches, shrines and private homes. Sebastian’s bleeding wounds resembled the sores caused by the pestilence, and in some cases the offending arrows symbolized the disease itself. This docent-guided tour will also include other thematic highlights of the permanent collection focused on saints and martyrs.
